SMRC: Director's Message
South Mississippi Regional Center has been a leader in the provision of
services to hundreds of people with intellectual and related
developmental disabilities since 1978. Our programs are licensed by the
Department of Health as an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals
with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID) and certified by the Department
of Mental Health’s Bureau of Intellectual and Developmental
Disabilities. We operate from seven locations providing residential and
community support services. The work we do would be impossible
without the partnerships we depend on throughout our six county
service area.
Our services are designed to support each person individually toward greater levels of
independence. This is achieved through person-centered planning and partners actively engaged
with the teams. Family members, volunteers, employees, and community providers are
essential to our work. Our diverse workforce remains committed to providing the highest quality
service. Our core values of Commitment, Respect, Responsibility, Communication, Cooperative
Effort, and Continuous Learning continue to guide each of us to achieve success.
The Department of Mental Health’s strategic plan calls for a continued
shift toward a community-based system of care. SMRC will remain
focused on supporting this effort as we downsize our residential options
and support people toward a community based provision of service. Our
teams of professionals are highly experienced and dedicated to
supporting each person we serve. As community service options expand,
the options available to people living with an intellectual or related
developmental disability have never been better. As the statewide
mental health system evolves, the face of SMRC will change. I encourage
you to prepare for this change and remain open-minded as we move
forward together.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with a diverse and talented group of employees and
to serve the public in this capacity.
